The Charles City Police Department is a civil service governed police agency which means that hiring standards are dictated by chapter 400 of the Iowa Code. Charles City Police Department officers handle approximately 12,000 calls for service each year including approximately 1,500 traffic stops. All sworn police officers in the state of Iowa are required to be academy certified by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. In addition to the training our officers get through the police academy, they receive 130 – 160 hours field training in 51 subject areas while on the job here in Charles City. Once certified, officers are required to continually update their training in areas that include, but are not limited to:
